We are specialists in air quality monitoring technology for both outdoor and indoor spaces. From premium reference grade monitoring technology to low cost sensors, we can design, build, deploy and manage individual air quality monitors or large networks to suit the needs of each project.
We work with a consortium of experienced individuals, including researchers, academics, engineers, technicians, data analysts, all leaders in their fields to provide the best possible outcomes for our clients.
Low cost sensor networks for IAQ and for hyperlocal monitoring are becoming an ever more effective way of gaining accurate information about air pollution to better inform policy and drive behaviour change leading to improved air quality. We strongly believe that our customers should own any data generated by devices and networks we build for them and promote open source data products wherever possible. #OwnYourAQData
The Company
Managing Director
I initially trained as an industrial chemist and chemical engineer in Paisley, Scotland, but an early interest in instrumentation developed while working at MacFarlane Robson Ltd, led me into a career in monitoring technology. in the 70's and 80's I worked with Instrumentation Laboratory Inc. in optical spectroscopy who were later acquired by Thermo Electron Inc. where i led their environmental business in the UK. In 1990 I moved on to a national sales manager position at Enviro Technology Ltd.

In 1992 I formed ETI Ltd, my first company, within 6 years ETI was the largest air quality monitoring company in the UK. In 2000 we merged with the Coal Research Establishment (CRE) and also opened a manufacturing plant at Monitor Europe Ltd in Scotland, forming EMC Group Ltd which was subsequently sold to Casella Group in 2001.

In 2002 I founded Air Monitors Ltd with my service manager Mel Hadfield and we again grew to become a leader in both the UK and Europe. Developing new monitoring technologies and data management tools we became a major supplier to national and local governments and worked as distributors for many of the world's leading manufacturers. I sold the company to ACOEM group in 2019 with a view to retirement, but my ongoing engagement with many of the challenges presented by poor air quality led me to form Scotswolds.
We focus on the design, deployment and quality assurance of sensor networks helping to better inform the public and improve access to air quality information. My passion is to democratise access to information which enables people to reduce their exposure to air pollution and lead healthier lives.
